The short version

Oku keeps only what it needs to help your child read: your sign-in details, a few facts about each child, and which words and sounds they found easy or hard. Oku doesn't record or keep your child's voice. It doesn't sell data, show ads, or use tracking cookies. You can delete everything at any time.

What Oku stores

  • Your Google account: your name, email address and profile picture, to sign you in. Oku never sees your Google password.
  • Each child you add: first name, age, first language, interests, and whether stories should say "she", "he" or "they". No surnames, birthdays or photos.
  • Reading progress: which words and sounds were read well or needed help, pronunciation scores, when each session happened, the reading level, and rewards earned.
  • A sign-in cookie on your device, so you stay signed in. It lasts up to 400 days and renews when used. There are no advertising or analytics cookies.

Your child's voice

While your child reads, the microphone audio streams to Microsoft Azure Speech, which scores pronunciation as it happens. Oku stores the scores, not the audio.

Services Oku uses

  • Cloudflare hosts the app and its database.
  • Microsoft Azure Speech listens during reading and scores pronunciation.
  • Anthropic (Claude) writes each week's new stories. It receives the child's age, first language, interests, reading level, and the words and sounds they found hard. It does not receive the child's name.
  • ElevenLabs turns story text into the narrator's voice. It receives story text only.
  • Google handles sign-in.

Oku shares nothing with anyone else and doesn't use your data to train AI models.

Children

Only a parent or guardian can create an account. Children never sign in, create an account or type in personal details; they only read.

Deleting your data

In the parent area, "Delete your family's data" removes every reader, story, reading log and reward, your account, and all sign-ins, straight away. Database backups are kept for up to 30 days before they expire. Narration audio files, which hold only story text read by a synthetic voice, may remain.
